German Sausage Melt

When the caraway and scallion studded cheese starts to melt over the pan-seared sausage and caramelized onions and peppers nestled in a freshly baked Hoagie, you’ll know it won’t be long before you’ll be digging into this German-inspired hoagie that’s to die for. Schmear it with some hearty mustard if you’d like and you’re good to go. .

What you will need:

1/4 cup vegetable oil

2 green bell peppers, cut into 1/2-inch strips

2 red bell peppers, cut into 1/2-inch strips

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices

1/2 teaspoon salt

1-1/2 pounds smoked German or Polish sausage, cut into 4 pieces

4 Hoagie rolls

1 (7.6-ounce) wedge Yancey’s Fancy® Bergenost™ with Caraway and Scallion cheese, shredded

What to do:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil until hot but not smoking.  Add peppers, onion, and salt; cook 15 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.  Remove to a bowl and cover.
  2. Make a cut, lengthwise, into each piece of sausage about three-quarters of the way through, so that it opens like a book. Place sausage in a skillet and sear 8 to 10 minutes, or until heated through and browned, turning occasionally.
  3. Evenly divide sausage, pepper, and onion onto rolls, sprinkle with cheese, and serve.
